Blockchain & Digital Assets / HD Wallet Derivation
What you will do: Generate a BIP39 mnemonic, derive the seed with PBKDF2, see hardened versus non-hardened derivation, derive Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana addresses, then read the quantum threat assessment.
Worked example: Generate Mnemonic gives 24 words from 32 bytes of entropy; Derive Accounts then shows a Bitcoin address at m/44'/0'/0'/0/0, an Ethereum address at m/44'/60'/0'/0/0 and a Solana address at m/44'/501'/0'/0'.
Runtime and privacy: The cryptographic exercise runs in this browser. Review the site privacy terms before entering sensitive material; use synthetic inputs for learning and evaluation.
For your role
- Developer / Engineer
- Generate Mnemonic starts the five steps: 256-bit entropy to a 24-word BIP39 phrase, a PBKDF2 seed, a master key and BIP32 or SLIP-0010 derivation to BTC, ETH and SOL addresses, with the PKCS#11 traces for each.
- Researcher / Academic
- The step table lists the sizes at each stage, from 256 bits of entropy to the derived addresses; use it to reproduce the derivation path and compare it with the classical and post-quantum key sizes.

1. Generate Mnemonic
Generate 256-bit entropy and convert it to a 24-word BIP39 mnemonic phrase. The mnemonic is the human-readable backup of your wallet — lose it and your funds are gone forever.
More entropy → more words (256 bits → 24 words). 128 bits → 12 words.
Cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator (CSPRNG). Never use Math.random().
BIP39 appends 8 bits of SHA-256 checksum to the 256-bit entropy, giving 264 bits → 24 words of 11 bits each.
Each word encodes 11 bits. The wordlist is ordered so the first 4 letters uniquely identify each word.
Example: "abandon abandon … art". Store offline. Never type into any website.
| Field | Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Entropy size | 256 bits (32 bytes) | More entropy → more words (256 bits → 24 words). 128 bits → 12 words. |
| Entropy source | OpenSSL rand / SoftHSM3 C_GenerateRandom | Cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator (CSPRNG). Never use Math.random(). |
| Checksum | SHA-256(entropy)[0:8 bits] | BIP39 appends 8 bits of SHA-256 checksum to the 256-bit entropy, giving 264 bits → 24 words of 11 bits each. |
| Wordlist | 2048 English words | Each word encodes 11 bits. The wordlist is ordered so the first 4 letters uniquely identify each word. |
| Output | 24-word mnemonic phrase | Example: "abandon abandon … art". Store offline. Never type into any website. |
